Embroidery vs DTF Printing vs Screen Print: Which is Right For You?
If you're ordering custom branded workwear, the decoration method you choose matters more than most people realise. Embroidery, DTF printing, and screen printing are the three main options for adding your company logo to garments — and each one produces a different result in terms of quality, durability, colour range, and cost per unit. Choosing the wrong method for your garments and artwork wastes budget and produces a finish that doesn't represent your brand properly.
At BAS 1 Group, we handle all three decoration methods in-house at our facility in Rainham, Essex — with no outsourcing, no minimum order, and a free digital proof before production begins. This guide explains exactly which method is right for your order, your budget, and your garments.
Embroidery
Thread stitched directly into fabric. The premium, long-lasting finish for corporate workwear and branded uniform.
DTF Printing
Full-colour heat-press transfer onto any fabric. No colour limits, no minimum order, ideal for complex artwork and hi-vis.
Screen Printing
Ink pushed through a mesh screen. Best value for bulk workwear printing with simple spot-colour designs.
What is Embroidery? The Premium Choice for Branded Workwear
Embroidery stitches your company logo directly into the fabric using coloured thread. It's the most popular decoration method for corporate workwear, staff uniform, and professional branded clothing in the UK — and for good reason. The raised, textured finish looks premium, holds up through hundreds of commercial washes, and never fades, peels, or cracks.
BAS 1 Group operates 78 in-house embroidery heads at our Rainham, Essex facility — one of the largest in-house embroidery operations in the region. We produce custom logo embroidery on everything from single polo shirts to large corporate uniform programmes, with fast turnaround and no outsourcing.
Best garments for embroidery
- Polo shirts — the most popular garment for embroidered workwear. Piqué fabric holds thread cleanly, producing sharp left-chest logo placement.
- Fleeces, softshell jackets, and bodywarmers — structured mid-layer garments that embroider exceptionally well, ideal for company logo embroidery in construction, logistics, and facilities management.
- Corporate jackets and blazers — embroidered branding elevates professional workwear and communicates quality to clients.
- Caps, beanies, and headwear — embroidery is the only practical choice for headwear where heat-press transfers would distort or peel.
- Hi-vis jackets and waistcoats — embroidered logos on fluorescent workwear are common across rail, construction, and highways sectors, providing durable branding that complies with EN ISO 20471 hi-vis standards when positioned correctly.
Who uses embroidered workwear?
Embroidery is the go-to choice for construction companies, NHS trusts, hospitality businesses, security firms, facilities management contractors, and any organisation that wants branded uniform to look professional and last. It's equally popular with small businesses ordering a dozen polo shirts and large enterprises managing thousands of garments across multiple sites.
Limitations of embroidery
- Highly detailed or photographic artwork — very fine lines, small text under 5mm, and photos don't translate into thread. Logos must be bold and clean. Our team will advise at digitisation stage.
- Thin, stretchy, or performance fabrics — lightweight moisture-wicking, mesh, and thin jersey can pucker under a dense stitch count. DTF printing is usually the better choice for technical sportswear or performance workwear.
- Large full-back graphic prints — oversized back prints are slow and expensive to embroider. Screen printing or DTF is more cost-effective for large-format artwork.
Cost tip: Embroidery pricing is driven by stitch count, not colour count. A three-colour logo costs the same to embroider as a two-colour one of the same size. Don't simplify your logo to save money — focus on the stitch area instead. We provide exact stitch counts with every free quote.
What is DTF Printing? The Versatile Choice for Full-Colour Garment Decoration
DTF printing — direct-to-film printing — is the fastest-growing garment decoration method in the UK. It works by printing your artwork onto a special PET film, applying a hot-melt adhesive powder, curing it in a heat tunnel, then heat-pressing the finished transfer onto the garment. The result is a smooth, vibrant, full-colour print that bonds tightly to the fabric with no setup fees, no colour restrictions, and no minimum order quantity.
DTF transfers can be applied to virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, nylon, blends, and performance materials — making it the most versatile option for custom printed workwear, branded hoodies, personalised t-shirts, and custom hi-vis clothing.
Best garments and applications for DTF printing
- Custom printed t-shirts and hoodies — full-colour DTF transfers on cotton and cotton-blend garments produce vivid, wash-fast results at any quantity from one upwards.
- Branded hi-vis clothing — DTF is one of the safest decoration methods for EN ISO 20471 certified hi-vis workwear. Correctly applied transfers don't reduce fluorescent area and don't affect chromaticity ratings, meaning your garments remain compliant after decoration.
- Personalised workwear with names and numbers — DTF makes per-garment personalisation completely straightforward. Whether you need 50 polos each with a different employee name, or numbered sports kits, each garment is printed individually with no extra setup cost.
- Complex, full-colour, or photographic logos — gradients, drop shadows, photographs, and artwork with dozens of colours all print at the same cost as a single-colour design.
- Performance and technical workwear — lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics, stretch panels, and sports textiles that can't be embroidered are ideal candidates for DTF.
- Large format back prints — full A3 or larger graphic back prints are economical with DTF, making it popular for promotional clothing, team wear, and event merchandise.
DTF printing vs embroidery — the key difference
The main difference between DTF printing and embroidery is texture and application. Embroidery is raised and tactile; DTF sits on top of the fabric as a smooth film. For premium corporate uniform — especially polo shirts and jackets destined for client-facing staff — embroidery often feels more upmarket. For colourful, complex, or full-bleed designs on casual or technical workwear, DTF produces results that embroidery simply can't match.
Limitations of DTF printing
- Very high volume, simple designs — for 500+ units of a 1–2 colour logo, screen printing's per-unit cost is hard to beat.
- Hard surfaces — standard DTF is fabric only. For hard hats, safety helmets, water bottles, or equipment, UV DTF printing is required — a separate process we also offer.
Washcare note: DTF transfers applied correctly are wash-fast at 40°C and durable through 50+ normal wash cycles. For heavy industrial laundry programmes at 60°C or above, let us know at quote stage — we specify adhesive grades rated for intensive washcare.
What is Screen Printing? The Best Value for Bulk Workwear Printing
Screen printing — also called silk screen printing — pushes ink through a fine mesh screen directly onto the fabric, one colour at a time. Each colour in your design requires its own screen, which carries a fixed production cost. Once the screens are made, ink coverage is fast and consistent, making screen printing the lowest cost-per-unit decoration method for large volume orders of the same design.
Screen printing has been the standard for bulk t-shirt printing, promotional clothing, and branded workwear for decades. At high quantities with simple designs, nothing matches it for price.
Best applications for screen printing
- High volume bulk workwear printing — 200+ units of the same design where keeping per-unit cost as low as possible is the priority.
- Simple bold spot-colour logos — flat colour designs with clean edges look excellent in screen print, producing a vivid, graphic result with ink that sits into the fabric fibres.
- Promotional t-shirts and event merchandise — charity runs, festivals, corporate events, and trade shows where large quantities of identical garments are needed at minimum cost per unit.
- Oversized graphic designs — large-scale statement back prints and bold front graphics that cover most of the garment are well-suited to screen printing.
- Branded sportswear and team kits — where all players have the same shirt design and personalisation isn't required.
Screen printing vs DTF printing — which is better?
For small to medium orders or artwork with many colours, DTF printing is almost always better value than screen printing. The break-even point is typically around 50–100 units — below that, DTF is cheaper and more flexible. Above 200 units with a simple 1–3 colour design, screen printing wins on per-unit cost. For complex, full-colour artwork at any volume, DTF is the better choice regardless of quantity.
Limitations of screen printing
- High setup cost on short runs — each screen has a fixed production cost that must be recovered across your order. Small quantities make screen printing inefficient and expensive per unit.
- Colour count increases cost — unlike DTF where full colour costs the same as single colour, every additional colour in screen printing requires another screen, more time, and more cost.
- No individual personalisation — adding per-garment names, employee numbers, or job roles requires a new screen per variant, making it completely impractical. Use DTF for any personalised workwear order.
- Fabric and compliance restrictions — screen printing works best on flat, smooth fabrics. Printing on hi-vis or certified safety garments requires specialist inks to maintain EN ISO 20471 compliance — always verify with your supplier.

Which Decoration Method Should You Choose?
In most cases the right method follows naturally from your garment type, artwork, and order quantity. Here's a practical decision guide for the most common workwear branding scenarios:
Choose embroidery if…
- Garments are polo shirts, fleeces, jackets, or caps
- You want a premium, long-lasting corporate finish
- Logo is clean and bold (not photographic)
- Building a long-term corporate uniform programme
- Wash durability over hundreds of cycles is critical
- You want the most professional-looking branded workwear
Choose DTF printing if…
- Artwork is full colour, photographic, or highly detailed
- Small quantities or one-off personalised orders
- You need individual names, numbers, or job roles per garment
- Garments are lightweight, stretchy, or technical fabrics
- Decorating certified hi-vis or safety clothing
- Large format full-colour back prints
Choose screen printing if…
- Ordering 200+ of the same design
- Design is 1–3 flat spot colours
- Lowest possible per-unit cost is the priority
- Producing event, promotional, or charity merchandise
- All garments are the same colour and style with no personalisation
Mix and match methods
- Many orders combine methods on the same garment
- Embroidered chest logo + DTF full-colour back print on the same hoodie
- Screen printed bulk t-shirts + embroidered management jackets on the same order
- UV DTF on hard hats + embroidery on polo shirts for the same workforce
- We'll advise the right combination at no cost

What Affects Garment Decoration Cost? A Transparent Breakdown
Understanding what drives cost in each method helps you make smarter decisions for your branded workwear budget without compromising on finish quality.
| Method | Primary cost driver | What this means for your order |
|---|---|---|
| Embroidery | Stitch count | More stitches = longer machine run time = higher cost. A small left-chest logo (8,000–12,000 stitches) is very affordable — typically £2–4 per garment depending on quantity. A large full-back logo (50,000+ stitches) costs significantly more. Colour count does not increase embroidery cost — a five-colour logo costs the same to embroider as a two-colour one of the same size. |
| DTF printing | Print area | Priced by transfer size. A small A5 chest logo costs less than a large A3 back print. Full colour is always included at no extra charge — a 10-colour logo with gradients and shadows costs the same as a single-colour version of the same size. No setup fees. No minimum order. |
| Screen printing | Screen setup + quantity | Each colour requires its own screen at a fixed setup cost (typically £20–40 per screen). That setup cost is spread across your order — ordering 500 units reduces the per-unit setup cost dramatically compared to 50 units. At high volumes with simple designs, screen printing delivers the lowest cost per garment of any decoration method. |
| All methods | Order quantity | Volume breaks reduce per-unit cost across all three methods. If you're close to a quantity threshold — say, ordering 45 when 50 triggers a lower price band — ordering the additional units almost always saves money overall. |
Watch out for hidden charges: Some workwear decoration suppliers charge separately for digitisation, setup, proofing, or artwork handling. At BAS 1 Group, digitisation, digital proofing, and artwork advice are all included in your quote — no surprises on the invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Workwear Decoration
What is the difference between embroidery and DTF printing on workwear?
Embroidery stitches your logo into the fabric using coloured thread, producing a raised, textured, premium finish. DTF printing heat-presses a full-colour film transfer onto the fabric, producing a smooth, flat print with unlimited colour capability. Embroidery is better for corporate polo shirts, fleeces, and jackets where a professional, durable look is the priority. DTF is better for full-colour designs, personalised garments, technical fabrics, and hi-vis clothing. Both methods are available with no minimum order at BAS 1 Group.
Is DTF printing better than screen printing?
For most orders, yes. DTF printing has no setup costs, no minimum order, and supports unlimited colours — making it better value than screen printing for small to medium runs and for any artwork with more than 2–3 colours. Screen printing only becomes more cost-effective at high volumes (typically 200+ units) with simple spot-colour designs, where its low per-unit ink cost outweighs the screen setup fees.
Can I have embroidery and DTF printing on the same garment?
Yes — combining decoration methods on the same garment is very common. A popular combination is an embroidered left-chest company logo on a hoodie or polo shirt paired with a full-colour DTF printed back graphic. The methods work together seamlessly and are produced on the same garment in sequence. Mention it at quote stage and we'll price both together with a single turnaround time.
What is the minimum order for embroidered workwear?
There is no minimum order for embroidery at BAS 1 Group. We produce single embroidered garments at the same quality as bulk orders — ideal for new starters, management samples, or replacing individual items from an existing uniform programme. Similarly, there is no minimum order for DTF printing. Screen printing has a practical minimum of around 50–100 units due to screen setup costs.
Can logos be printed or embroidered on hi-vis clothing?
Yes. Both embroidery and DTF printing are safe decoration methods for EN ISO 20471 certified hi-vis workwear, provided the decoration doesn't reduce the total visible fluorescent surface area below the minimum required for the garment's class. Our in-house team calculates this before production begins and will advise if a logo placement needs adjusting to maintain compliance. Screen printing on hi-vis requires specialist compliance inks and should be verified carefully. See our hi-vis clothing standards guide for full technical details.
How long does branded workwear decoration take?
Standard turnaround at BAS 1 Group is 5–7 working days from artwork approval to dispatch for both embroidery and DTF printing. Screen printing typically takes 7–10 working days due to screen production time. Fast-track decoration is available subject to capacity — contact our team with your deadline and we'll confirm availability. Managed corporate accounts can be set up on a standing stock programme to eliminate lead times entirely.
How many washes will embroidery and DTF printing last?
Correctly applied embroidery is essentially permanent — thread stitched into fabric doesn't fade, peel, or crack and will typically outlast the garment itself, even through commercial laundry. DTF transfers applied at the correct temperature and pressure are wash-fast at 40°C and rated for 50+ wash cycles under normal domestic or light commercial laundry. For industrial washing programmes at 60°C+, we specify DTF adhesive grades rated for intensive washcare — let us know at quote stage.
What file format should I send for my company logo?
For embroidery, a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF with embedded fonts and outlines) or a high-resolution PNG at 300 dpi or above gives our digitisation team the best starting point for converting your artwork into a stitch file. For DTF and screen printing, vector files are ideal. If you only have a JPEG or low-resolution image, send it anyway — our artwork team will assess it and advise on the best path forward at no charge.
What is UV DTF printing and when do I need it?
UV DTF uses UV-cured inks printed onto a rigid transfer film, designed specifically for hard, non-porous surfaces. Standard DTF is fabric only. If you need your company logo on hard hats, safety helmets, water bottles, metal flasks, lockers, or equipment, UV DTF is the correct method. It produces scratch-resistant, durable, vibrant labels without heat pressing. We offer UV DTF alongside our standard garment decoration services — contact us for a UV DTF quote.
Do you supply the garments as well as the decoration?
Yes — BAS 1 Group is a full-service branded workwear supplier, not just a decoration service. We supply garments from leading workwear brands including Portwest, Regatta, Result, Uneek, and more, and decorate them in-house before dispatch. You can also supply your own garments if preferred. Browse our full workwear range, hi-vis clothing, and t-shirts — or request a quote and we'll recommend the right garments for your industry and budget.
